Book Review- The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai

Book Review:
The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai by Onyeka Nwelue

The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai is an extraordinary tale amidst the world of crime in the city of Mumbai. The intertwined struggle between fulfilling dreams of the past and fighting for survival, getting caught in violence, drugs, human trafficking, murder and sex is penned in a very captivating light. The power of diversity is the theme highlighting the plight of Nigerians who are in Mumbai.

The author has used his skillful storytelling, narratives and experiences to shed light on stereotyping which the world does not know about, illustrating the diversity within the immigrants and their hopes for a better future.

This book takes its readers on an unexpected journey from Surulere neighbourhood in Lagos, to Bandra in Mumbai. The story of Uche Mbadiegwu, appearance of Periwinkle in his life creating uncertainties and conflicts left me second guessing after each event. The perfect timing to introduce each new character into the story, their relationship with Uche and keeping them connected throughout makes the book incredibly gripping.

The protagonist delves into his internal conflicts quite often which makes it difficult for him to decide between ethical and unethical. Irrespective of the choices made by him the storyline offers a stimulating and insightful read making the readers empathise with Uche. This take is quite unusual in this genre of writing but the humanity surfaces at each phase.

The others apart from the main character hold a true significance while representing their own stories and conflicts which gives the reader a chance to indulge in different perspectives in the same time line.

" Things happen when they happen, and only a fool would ignore the sign."

" I would rather be killed than allow another to take bread from my mouth a second time."

A couple of my favourite lines from the book portraying the spirit of main character that he never gave up and also he was a rebellion is both inspiring and thought-provoking at the same time.

Few references in Pidgin English makes the reading quite unique in its own way. Besides the experience the writing style of the author is gripping, interesting and well- researched. Amidst the world of crime and chaos, Uche's budding love story doesn't go unnoticed.

It is definitely a great book to read that grips its readers till the last page. I woud highly recommend The Nigerian Mafia Mumbai especially if your genre is crime thriller or if you would like to indulge in an adventure from the comforts of your couch. As for me, this story is going to stay with me for very long time.

Thanks for reading

BOOK TOUR - Author Interview

Author Interview:    The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai by Onyeka Nwelue

Today on my blog I have the interview of Onyeka Nwelue author of the book "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai" answering the about the back story, his inspirations and some very interesting insights for budding writers.

Question 1. What inspired you to write " The Nigerian Mafia Mumbai"?

Onyeka : The decision to pen "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai" was significantly influenced by the headlines and captions I often came across in Indian newspapers concerning Nigerians in India. These narratives, frequently focusing on the experiences of the Nigerian community within the country, piqued my interest and raised numerous questions within me.

I began to contemplate the stories behind these headlines, realizing that they held untold tales of triumphs, challenges, and a complex interplay of identities. The newspapers portrayed these stories as mere snapshots, but I felt there was a deeper, more intricate narrative waiting to be unveiled.

Intrigued by the dynamics of the Nigerian diaspora in Mumbai, I embarked on a journey to explore these stories. My aim was to go beyond the sensationalism often found in the headlines, to delve into the lives, experiences, and aspirations of the individuals who made up this vibrant community. I wanted to capture their voices, their struggles, and their dreams, offering a more comprehensive and nuanced perspective on the subject.

"The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai" is the result of this endeavor, a testament to the power of storytelling to provide a richer and more empathetic understanding of the world around us. It is a bridge between the headlines and the human experiences they merely hint at, allowing readers to engage with the stories of the Nigerian diaspora in India on a deeper and more meaningful level.

Question 2. Was there a challenge in particular that you encountered while writing the book?

Onyeka: Certainly, while writing the book, I encountered a unique challenge that resonated with the very essence of the narrative. The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai explores the experiences and lives of the Nigerian diaspora in India, and it was essential to approach this sensitive subject with great care and understanding.

One significant challenge was navigating the preconceptions and stereotypes associated with the Nigerian community in India. These stereotypes, often fueled by media portrayals, had created an environment of bias and misunderstanding. As an author, my goal was to break down these misconceptions and offer a more profound and authentic perspective.

I had to find a balance between addressing the challenges faced by the community, such as racism, xenophobia, and struggles associated with living in a foreign land, while also highlighting their resilience, talents, and unique contributions to Indian society. It was vital to convey that the Nigerian diaspora was not defined solely by the negative stereotypes but by the diverse and multifaceted individuals who formed this vibrant community.

Ultimately, this challenge became a driving force for the book. It pushed me to dig deeper, conducting extensive research, interviews, and gathering firsthand accounts to create a more holistic narrative. The writing process, in this sense, evolved from simply conveying a story to actively participating in a broader conversation about diversity, identity, and the power of breaking down prejudices through storytelling. It was a challenge that added depth to the book's purpose and message.

Question 3. What message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

Onyeka: I hope that readers will take away several important messages from my book, "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai." First and foremost, I want readers to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of the Nigerian diaspora in India. This community has faced numerous challenges, including racism, discrimination, and a lack of access to basic services, and I hope that readers will empathize with their struggles and recognize the importance of inclusivity and equality in society.

Another critical message I hope readers will embrace is the power of diversity. The Nigerian diaspora in India is incredibly diverse, with individuals from various backgrounds, professions, and walks of life. This diversity is a source of strength and resilience, and I want readers to appreciate the richness that comes from embracing and celebrating differences.

Furthermore, I hope that my book encourages readers to question stereotypes and preconceptions. We often form judgments based on limited information or biased narratives, and I hope that the book challenges these stereotypes, prompting readers to be more open-minded and curious about other cultures and communities.

Lastly, the book underscores the significance of storytelling as a means to create change. Through the narratives and experiences shared in the book, I aim to inspire readers to use their voices to shed light on issues of injustice, discrimination, and inequality. It's a call to action for readers to be more active in advocating for positive change in their communities and in the world.

In essence, "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai" is not just a book; it's a call for empathy, a celebration of diversity, and an invitation to actively engage in creating a more inclusive and equitable society. I hope that readers walk away from this book with a deeper appreciation for the power of storytelling in promoting understanding and fostering positive change.

In addition to the profound messages I hope readers take away from my book, "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai," I must acknowledge that this novel is also an immersive journey into a world filled with intrigue and suspense. It delves into the gritty realities of life, portraying a tale of violence, drugs, human trafficking, murder, and sex, all woven into the narrative. This blend of intense storytelling is intended to engage readers on multiple levels, from providing insights into the lives of those in the Nigerian diaspora in India to offering a thrilling and thought-provoking reading experience. It's a book that doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of society while simultaneously shedding light on the resilience and spirit of its characters. Ultimately, it's a captivating narrative designed to both entertain and enlighten.

Question 4. Could you share some insights about your writing process?

Onyeka: My writing process involves meticulous planning and organization. I typically begin by outlining the chapters and the key events or themes I want to cover in each of them. This chapter-by-chapter outline serves as my roadmap, guiding me through the narrative. It helps me maintain a clear and structured storyline while ensuring that I cover all the essential aspects of the book.

Once the outline is in place, I delve into the actual writing process. I find that having a well-defined plan makes the writing itself more efficient and less prone to distractions. It also enables me to maintain a consistent writing pace.

Additionally, I believe in the power of revision. After completing a draft, I go back and review and revise my work multiple times. This process helps refine the narrative, ensuring that it flows smoothly and that the characters and themes are well-developed.

So, in essence, my writing process is a blend of structured planning and the creative act of storytelling. It's this combination that I find most effective in bringing my stories to life.

Question 5. What would be your one go-to advice to aspiring writers around the world based on your experiences?

Onyeka: Certainly, I'd be happy to elaborate. My one go-to advice for aspiring writers around the world, based on my experiences, is to keep writing, no matter what. Writing can be a challenging journey, filled with moments of self-doubt and creative blockades. But it's in those very moments that your dedication to your craft shines the brightest.

The act of writing, like any art form, is a process of growth and self-discovery. It's through consistent writing that you hone your skills, discover your unique voice, and unearth stories that are waiting to be told. It's also a way to overcome the hurdles and self-criticism that often plague writers.

I believe that One day the clouds will clear". For me it symbolizes the idea that even in the darkest and most challenging phases of your writing journey, there's a promise of brighter days ahead. Your dedication, resilience, and the simple act of continuing to put words on paper will eventually lead to moments of clarity, inspiration, and achievement.

So, my advice to aspiring writers is this: Don't give up. Keep writing, even when the path ahead seems clouded and uncertain. It's through this persistence that you'll not only improve as a writer but also find the success and fulfillment you seek in your writing journey.

BOOK TOUR

Guest Post:    The Nigerian Mafia- Mumbai
       by Onyeka Nwelue

Only the thought of being stuck in a foreign land alone is enough to scare us and in case it is without any emotional, legal or financial support can be a situation where anyone would find it difficult to keep themselves positive and productive at the same time.

This guest post by the author of the book "The Nigerian Mafia- Mumbai" Onyeka Nwelue is a sure saviour. Do read to know more.

It is unimaginable to be in such a situation where, in a foreign country, a person finds themself without legal, financial, or emotional support. However, it would be impractical to pretend as though it is not the reality of many people.

I was eighteen when I went to India for the first time, and it was to write. My father’s financial support from Nigeria kept me propped up. Now and then, he reached out, to know whether I was on track with the purpose for which he had sponsored my trip and sustenance to India. Despite his support, I was dealing with a sense of loss and everything reminded me that I was far from home; from my family, my friends, and everything that I have known all my life. I was a teenager after all.

However, should you find yourself, just like an older or younger version of me, in a foreign land, but without emotional, legal, and financial support, then you are in a position I wouldn’t wish upon you. But first, you will have to help yourself in seeing the world as it truly is; a global community linked by the commonness of our humanity and the needs associated with it to meet supply and demand. We are members of this community, and so are you. Hence it follows that you have something to contribute and which is on demand. But then, you have to find it. And only when you find it can you offer it and set a price for it. When you do, then it naturally follows that you will be able to negotiate for yourself, and rightly so, everything that you need.

To put this more simply, here are the tips I think you should take seriously:

  •     Make friends with locals, and more especially expatriates. Many locals are not knowledgeable about the bureaucracy of getting legal stay for foreigners, hence you must keep fellow foreigners within your circle of friends.
  •    Stay away from trouble and trouble-prone environments. A police record could complicate your chances of getting a residence.
  •     Maintain connection with your family and friends back home. Not only is this important for emotional support but with the world being a global community and economically controlled by laws of demand and supply, it is very possible that your current location could offer something in high demand back home, or vice versa.
  •      Ensure that you maintain a safe and peaceful environment both internally and externally. Ideas, progressive thoughts, and opportunities are best recognized within peaceful environments. Hence since you should live in safe environments, you must maintain a positive outlook on life. Shun depression and desperation. They only breed the opposite of what is necessary to keep you productive.

Despite all of these tips, it is my wish that you never court any circumstance that leaves you without legal, emotional, or financial support in some foreign land.
