BOOK TOUR - Author Interview

Author Interview:    The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai by Onyeka Nwelue

Today on my blog I have the interview of Onyeka Nwelue author of the book "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai" answering the about the back story, his inspirations and some very interesting insights for budding writers.

Question 1. What inspired you to write " The Nigerian Mafia Mumbai"?

Onyeka : The decision to pen "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai" was significantly influenced by the headlines and captions I often came across in Indian newspapers concerning Nigerians in India. These narratives, frequently focusing on the experiences of the Nigerian community within the country, piqued my interest and raised numerous questions within me.

I began to contemplate the stories behind these headlines, realizing that they held untold tales of triumphs, challenges, and a complex interplay of identities. The newspapers portrayed these stories as mere snapshots, but I felt there was a deeper, more intricate narrative waiting to be unveiled.

Intrigued by the dynamics of the Nigerian diaspora in Mumbai, I embarked on a journey to explore these stories. My aim was to go beyond the sensationalism often found in the headlines, to delve into the lives, experiences, and aspirations of the individuals who made up this vibrant community. I wanted to capture their voices, their struggles, and their dreams, offering a more comprehensive and nuanced perspective on the subject.

"The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai" is the result of this endeavor, a testament to the power of storytelling to provide a richer and more empathetic understanding of the world around us. It is a bridge between the headlines and the human experiences they merely hint at, allowing readers to engage with the stories of the Nigerian diaspora in India on a deeper and more meaningful level.

Question 2. Was there a challenge in particular that you encountered while writing the book?

Onyeka: Certainly, while writing the book, I encountered a unique challenge that resonated with the very essence of the narrative. The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai explores the experiences and lives of the Nigerian diaspora in India, and it was essential to approach this sensitive subject with great care and understanding.

One significant challenge was navigating the preconceptions and stereotypes associated with the Nigerian community in India. These stereotypes, often fueled by media portrayals, had created an environment of bias and misunderstanding. As an author, my goal was to break down these misconceptions and offer a more profound and authentic perspective.

I had to find a balance between addressing the challenges faced by the community, such as racism, xenophobia, and struggles associated with living in a foreign land, while also highlighting their resilience, talents, and unique contributions to Indian society. It was vital to convey that the Nigerian diaspora was not defined solely by the negative stereotypes but by the diverse and multifaceted individuals who formed this vibrant community.

Ultimately, this challenge became a driving force for the book. It pushed me to dig deeper, conducting extensive research, interviews, and gathering firsthand accounts to create a more holistic narrative. The writing process, in this sense, evolved from simply conveying a story to actively participating in a broader conversation about diversity, identity, and the power of breaking down prejudices through storytelling. It was a challenge that added depth to the book's purpose and message.

Question 3. What message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

Onyeka: I hope that readers will take away several important messages from my book, "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai." First and foremost, I want readers to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of the Nigerian diaspora in India. This community has faced numerous challenges, including racism, discrimination, and a lack of access to basic services, and I hope that readers will empathize with their struggles and recognize the importance of inclusivity and equality in society.

Another critical message I hope readers will embrace is the power of diversity. The Nigerian diaspora in India is incredibly diverse, with individuals from various backgrounds, professions, and walks of life. This diversity is a source of strength and resilience, and I want readers to appreciate the richness that comes from embracing and celebrating differences.

Furthermore, I hope that my book encourages readers to question stereotypes and preconceptions. We often form judgments based on limited information or biased narratives, and I hope that the book challenges these stereotypes, prompting readers to be more open-minded and curious about other cultures and communities.

Lastly, the book underscores the significance of storytelling as a means to create change. Through the narratives and experiences shared in the book, I aim to inspire readers to use their voices to shed light on issues of injustice, discrimination, and inequality. It's a call to action for readers to be more active in advocating for positive change in their communities and in the world.

In essence, "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai" is not just a book; it's a call for empathy, a celebration of diversity, and an invitation to actively engage in creating a more inclusive and equitable society. I hope that readers walk away from this book with a deeper appreciation for the power of storytelling in promoting understanding and fostering positive change.

In addition to the profound messages I hope readers take away from my book, "The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai," I must acknowledge that this novel is also an immersive journey into a world filled with intrigue and suspense. It delves into the gritty realities of life, portraying a tale of violence, drugs, human trafficking, murder, and sex, all woven into the narrative. This blend of intense storytelling is intended to engage readers on multiple levels, from providing insights into the lives of those in the Nigerian diaspora in India to offering a thrilling and thought-provoking reading experience. It's a book that doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of society while simultaneously shedding light on the resilience and spirit of its characters. Ultimately, it's a captivating narrative designed to both entertain and enlighten.

Question 4. Could you share some insights about your writing process?

Onyeka: My writing process involves meticulous planning and organization. I typically begin by outlining the chapters and the key events or themes I want to cover in each of them. This chapter-by-chapter outline serves as my roadmap, guiding me through the narrative. It helps me maintain a clear and structured storyline while ensuring that I cover all the essential aspects of the book.

Once the outline is in place, I delve into the actual writing process. I find that having a well-defined plan makes the writing itself more efficient and less prone to distractions. It also enables me to maintain a consistent writing pace.

Additionally, I believe in the power of revision. After completing a draft, I go back and review and revise my work multiple times. This process helps refine the narrative, ensuring that it flows smoothly and that the characters and themes are well-developed.

So, in essence, my writing process is a blend of structured planning and the creative act of storytelling. It's this combination that I find most effective in bringing my stories to life.

Question 5. What would be your one go-to advice to aspiring writers around the world based on your experiences?

Onyeka: Certainly, I'd be happy to elaborate. My one go-to advice for aspiring writers around the world, based on my experiences, is to keep writing, no matter what. Writing can be a challenging journey, filled with moments of self-doubt and creative blockades. But it's in those very moments that your dedication to your craft shines the brightest.

The act of writing, like any art form, is a process of growth and self-discovery. It's through consistent writing that you hone your skills, discover your unique voice, and unearth stories that are waiting to be told. It's also a way to overcome the hurdles and self-criticism that often plague writers.

I believe that One day the clouds will clear". For me it symbolizes the idea that even in the darkest and most challenging phases of your writing journey, there's a promise of brighter days ahead. Your dedication, resilience, and the simple act of continuing to put words on paper will eventually lead to moments of clarity, inspiration, and achievement.

So, my advice to aspiring writers is this: Don't give up. Keep writing, even when the path ahead seems clouded and uncertain. It's through this persistence that you'll not only improve as a writer but also find the success and fulfillment you seek in your writing journey.
